Eco-Congregation

We applied for the Bronze Award in 2020. We completed an Eco-Award application, comprising of all the actions MPC had taken over the ten or so years we had been a member of Eco-Congregation Scotland:

We collected all manner of items over the years and continue the collection of:

  1. Small used toner cartridges
  2. Unwanted mobile phones, laptops and small games consoles
  3. Used stamps
  4. Silver blister medicine packs

The congregation is encouraged to drastically cut their plastic waste, including single use plastic bottles, supermarket packaging and fast-food containers. Recycling is promoted in the church buildings.

As a congregation, we supported Fairtrade products. This was instigated by Pat Angus and carried on both at church and in supporters’ homes. Products used included food, drinks and cleaning items. We are able to support workers in less well-developed parts of the world getting paid a fair wage for their labours.

Recycling empty jam jars and ramekins to the church for use of the jam / chutney makers is also an important initiative to raise funds at our annual Bake & Book Sales in the summer months. Donations for the general stalls of the Bake & Book are also very important to re-use items and prevent them going to landfill sites. Items remaining unsold are donated to various charities, including Starter Packs in Dundee, for onward distribution and use.

We encourage support of our local beach clean, taking place the first Saturday of each month at the Blue Seaway.

We have included tips and advice, through “Impact”, to reduce energy use / waste and our carbon footprint.

In our new church/hall buildings in Monifieth, we have encouraged the use of high levels of floor, wall and ceiling insulation, heat recovery mechanical extraction, photovoltaic roof panels and underfloor heating. All lighting is LED, which is highly cost-effective.

Bird boxes, insect homes and planted out areas of wildflowers / trees have been added to the church and manse gardens.

As a church we have also supported the various COP climate change conferences and Earth Hour, by having various dedicated services and quizzes over the years.

The above items formed the basis of our submission to Eco-Congregation Scotland and when we were examined in May 2020, the award we were granted the higher Silver Award in recognition of our extraordinary efforts in achieving our goals over a wide spectrum of activities.
