Community Fridge

The setting up of a Community Fridge in Monifieth has been some years in the making. The original idea was floated by our former Parish Assistant as the congregation was aware of the need to provide free food for those in most need in our community. We also wanted to minimise the appalling food waste that we knew existed.

Originally it was hoped that this would be a Church initiative but it will now be delivered through a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) with local Trustees, including Church members. It is registered with OSCR - Charity Registration Number SC052554.

Finding suitable premises in central Monifieth was a big challenge but, with a great deal of help from the Monifieth based Angus Councillors, the Monifieth Community Council and Angus Council’s Estates Department the Trustees were offered the short-term lease of the disused WC Block adjacent to the Monifieth Library.

The building has now been refurbished and the necessary approvals are in place.

The next major challenge is to encourage volunteers to support the community fridge and serve the public. The opening times will depend on the level of participation and number of volunteers willing to help on a regular basis.

This is a much needed and exciting prospect. As a congregation we are aware that there are families in Monifieth and surrounding communities who are in need of such a facility, borne out by the “Food for All”, initiative at Monifieth South Angus Parish Church of Scotland held every Thursday morning. The community fridge will extend such support and the variety of food on a more regular basis during the weeks and months ahead and help vastly reduce food waste also.

It is hoped that the fridge will open in March 2024. A more accurate date will be given within the next couple of weeks.
